Mayanpan was the political and cultural capital of the Maya in the Yucatan Peninsula and quite a large city totaling 15,000 – 17,000 people and with more than 4,000 structures. Our guides will hike you through the most popular ones and then allow you time to explore on your own.

Beginning in 1939 this site has been surveyed and excavated by archeological teams. Since the year 2000, a collaborative Mexican-United States team has been conducting excavations and recovery at the site. It’s amazing the artifacts that are uncovered which are priceless.

Uxmal is considered one of the most important archaeological sites of the Maya culture. Our guides will explain much of the history as they guide you through the ancient roads called “sacbes” that connect the buildings.

Maya chronicles state that Uxmal was founded about 500 A.D. by Hun Uitzil Chac Tutul Xiu. This family ruled for generations. When Xiu moved their capital to Mani, the population of Uxmal declined and they weakened.

Following the Spanish conquest of the Yucatan, early documents suggest that Uxmal was still an inhabited place of some importance into the 1550s. Since the Spanish did not build a town here, Uxmal was soon after largely abandoned.
